Herman Matthews

November 18, 1941 – January 7, 2021

Herman Matthews gained his heavenly on January 7, 2021, surrounded by his family after a long illness. He was born in Akron, Oh to the late Henry and Florence Matthews on November 18, 1941.

Herman graduated from Garfield High School and went on to continue his education at the University of Akron and Kent State University. After his first job at a local bowling alley, in his early 20’s Herman started working at Chrysler Stamping Plant in Twinsburg, Oh on the assembly line. Throughout the years he was promoted to supervisor, then to area manager, and he finished his career as the Assistant Plant Manager. Herman, a lifelong NAACP member, was dedicated

Herman retired from Chrysler Stamping Plant with 40 years of service.

He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Shirley Matthews; children, Kathleen Matthews (Gwen), Duane Matthews (Gwen), Dwight (Lynne) Beasley, and Hermonia Burney; brother, Henry (Kathy) Matthews; sister, Ruth Cole; sisters-in-law, Alverna Matthews and Mildred Bibby; grandchildren, Jessica Lynnelee and Duane (Maddie) Matthews, Ashley (Tames) Hilton, Shawnte Beasley, Latasha Hunter, Demetrius, and Keisha Burney; 13 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Public viewing will be held on Monday, January 18, 2021 from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon at 1695 Diagonal Rd. Akron, Oh 44320. Private services will immediately follow. Services will be live-streamed at 11:00 noon at www.sommervillefuneralservice.com Interment Mount Peace Cemetery.
