James Walker

The family of James R. Walker announces with great sorrow his passing on Monday July 25, 2022. He was born on August 30, 1948 in Akron, Ohio. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug 6, 2022. Friends may call at 11:00am until 11:30 am at Sommerville Funeral Services, 1695 Diagonal Rd, Akron, Oh 44320. Memorial service will immediately follow.

James graduated from East High School in Akron, Ohio, and The University of Akron, he held a master’s degree and was working toward his PhD. While at the University of Akron he became a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Eta Tau Lambda Chapter. This brotherhood reflected his own principles of scholarship and perseverance. James enjoyed his career with LaGuardia Community College in New York, teaching was his passion. Over the years with LaGuardia Community College, he taught Introduction to Sociology and Urban Sociology. He was a true intellectual with vast interests. James touched countless lives, of students, colleagues, and friends.

James enjoyed many hobbies, amongst his favorites were reading, writing, traveling, attending concerts/festivals, Broadway plays, playing chess, shopping, and all things New York. James leaves behind an impressive legacy of scholarship and mentorship. He will be fondly remembered for his love of politics, generous spirit, hearty laugh, and quick wit.

He was preceded in death by: his loving mother, Mary Alice Powell-Walker; father, James J. Walker; aunt, Vivian Chambers; uncles, Roy, Dempsey, Berry and Willie (Bill); cousins, Billy Powell and Cara Matthews.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories: daughter, Jema Palmer; sister, Cynthia White and brother, Roy Walker; aunt, Rose Marie; nieces, Stephanie White and Summer Walker; great nephews, Jaylen, David and Cire. He also leaves behind a host of cousins, friends, and colleagues, who loved him and will miss his loving and sincere personality.
