Douglas “Doug” Matthews

May 11, 1931 – November 9, 2019

Douglas “Doug” Matthews was born on May 11, 1931 in Leaksville, NC to Dennis and Grace (Roberts) Matthews. Doug attended Akron Public Schools and was on the 1950 City Champion Team of South High School. He was recognized as Defensive Player of the Year. During his school days he met the love of his life, Mattie Dix.

Doug served in the U.S. Army and fought on the front lines in the Korean Conflict. After his Honorable Discharge, he and Mattie married on July 20, 1953. From this union three daughters were born, Deonna Raye “Yubbie”, Deidra Ann “Deechie” and Demetra “Muffie” Matthews.

He retired from Schubert Industries, Inc. after 44 years of services with 12 years of perfect attendance.

Doug was very creative, drawing a few black and white pictures with a #2 pencil which he came to enjoy after he retired.

He is preceded in death by parents; infant brother, Charles Ray; wife, Mattie of 64 years and daughter, Demetra.

Doug is survived by devoted daughters, Deonna and Deidra; loving grandchildren, Demetra Fountain and Darrah Matthews; special great grandchildren, Dallas and Jordyn Fountain, KyAsia Williams and Carmel Hannah; brothers, Dr. Rodney Delaney, Johnnie (Ann) Moore; aunt, Margaret Pratt; cousins, Sherman Roberts and David Mobley, Hattie and Sam Bellamy, Matthews, Pratts and Roberts Family; brother-in-laws, Fred “Bebe” Sommerville and Johnny “Sluggo” Burks II; nieces and nephews, Johnny Burks II and Tara Burks, Kieran Delaney, Michael, Truelove, Veronica, Kevin (Maggie), Deborah “Debbie”, Jermaine and Kortney Sommerville, Ronald Smith Jr. , Whitney Smith and a host of other relatives and friends.
